Research

The Kolb Lab is devoted to the understanding of molecular pathways that, when altered, result in diseases of the motor neuron. We are particularly interested in alterations in RNA metabolism that result in neurological diseases. The mechanisms of spinal muscular atrophy and of distal hereditary neuropathies are current foci for biochemical and cell-based investigation. Our long-term goals are to determine the precise mechanisms that cause motor neuron diseases, including sporadic amyotrophic lateral sclerosis, and to develop small molecule and/or gene-based therapies for these diseases.

Stephen J. Kolb, M.D., Ph.D.

Dr. Kolb is Assistant Professor in the Department of Neurology and Assistant Professor in the Department of Molecular & Cellular Biochemistry at The Ohio State University Medical Center.

Biographical Sketch

Dr. Kolb received his BA in Biochemistry from the University of Texas at Austin in 1990. He completed a dual MD/PhD program at the University of Texas Medical School in Houston in 1998. During the PhD portion of this program, he worked in the laboratory of Dr. Neal Waxham. Dr. Kolb completed residency programs in Medicine and Neurology at the Hospital of the University of Pennsylvania, Philadelphia in 1999 and 2002. He spent the next five years as a neuromuscular research post-doctoral Fellow in the laboratory of Dr. Gideon Dreyfuss of the University of Pennsylvania. Dr. Kolb joined the faculty at The Ohio State University Medical Center in 2007.
